New Year’s Message from the Governor-General Sir Patrick Allen

My fellow Jamaicans and Friends of Jamaica, We begin each year with the joys, burden, sorrow, or triumph of the past year still etched in our minds. That past and the way it influences us will determine how we live in the ensuing year. The questions before each of us are, how well have we learned the lessons of the past and how shall we use our failures and mistakes as stepping stones to progress in this New Year! Today we come to this new page of our history, as individuals and as a people, having passed through a year fraught with many challenges. Yet 2012 was also a year of unforgettable achievements by fellow Jamaicans. It marked the celebration of our nation’s Golden Jubilee, as well as our exploits at the memorable London Olymipics. New Year’s Message from Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller

Jamaicans All: Celebrating the advent of a New Year always reminds me of the wonder of a glorious Jamaican sunrise. As the golden sun peeks over the majestic Blue Mountains, it seems to gently push away the night-sky. Rays of hope and promise nudge through a soft and reflective crimson sky. The dazzling light and vibrant energy of that sunshine fuel the activities of a brand new day…a brand new year. On this the first day of the year 2013, I greet you with the love, light, warmth and energy of this new dawn. Our ancestors from Africa, Asia and Europe call upon us to gaze into our past to seek out the lessons that help us to chart the path for our future. Today, I call on each of us to look to both recent and more distant histories to prepare us for every new day; every new year. That ...

New Year’s Message from the Leader of the Opposition Andrew Holness

My fellow Jamaicans: The year 2012 has come to a close. It is timely therefore that we reflect on its passing. Undoubtedly we will do so with mixed emotions. At times our spirits fell to abysmal lows such as at the gruesome murders and physical abuse of our women. We experienced dissappointing economic decline, deterioration in our net international reserves (NIR), and a worrying depreciation in the value of the Jamaican dollar. Thankfully, there were times when our spirits rose to incredible highs. As we basked in the glory of the successes and achievementsof our athletes at the 2012 Olypmics and we proudly celebrated our 50th year of independence. For this New Year, let us focus on the imperatives to achieve our economic independence. At the heart of this thrust must be a collective ...

Governor-General’s New Year Message 2012

My fellow Jamaicans. The dawn of a New Year is always eagerly anticipated. It is ushered in with much jubilation, excitement and renewed hope for success, and with us Jamaicans there is always that special flavour. Generally, it is at this time also that we review the past year and make plans for new and greater achievements over the next twelve months. We are beginning 2012 with the election of a new government to lead us through the celebration of our 50th Anniversary of Independence. I commend the people of Jamaica for again displaying a high level of maturity, because for the sixteenth time since Universal Adult Suffrage, the democratic process has successfully been used to select national leaders. The celebration of this 50th Anniversary is an opportunity for all of us to reflect on ...
