The entrants for Jamaica’s title of Sports Man and Woman of the year was a competitive as usual in 2005 when Jamaica’s top sporting men and women gathered at the Island Cinema in New Kingston to hear the winner of the prestigious title in 2005.
During 2005 there were many top performances from Jamaica athletes on the world stage many of which came from the juniors and in various types of sports.
At the end of it all the current fastest man in the world and one of the top triple jumpers in the world walked away with the awards. Asafa Powell’s world record of 9.77 over 100 metres put him on top and Trecia-Kaye Smith’s World Championships triple jump gold medal gave her the prize over stiff competition in women’s category.
Veronica Campbell and Chris Gayle received prizes for their runner up positions, Chris mainly for his Jamaican record of 317 test runs and Campbell for her consistent performances over 100 and 200 metres throughout 2005 at various international events.
