Jamaica’s 45th Year of Independence to light up Miami Tower

In commemoration of Jamaica’s 45th Independence anniversary celebrations, the Bank of America Tower at International Place in downtown Miami will again illuminate in the colours of the Jamaican flag – black, green and gold – on Friday, August 3, at dusk.

The Miami landmark will remain lit throughout the weekend into Tuesday morning (August 7), as a tribute to the impact of the Jamaican community in South Florida.

Built in 1987, the prestigious landmark Tower houses a wide range of modern office and communications infrastructure. The office building overlooks downtown Miami and Biscayne Bay and is widely recognized for its changing palette of exterior lighting schemes, timed to coincide with holidays and significant occasions.

The 47-floor tower is usually lit for special events in Miami. However, it is exceptional that the building will remain illuminated for the entire weekend in honour of the Jamaican independence celebrations in the South Florida community.

Jamaica’s Consul General, Ricardo Allicock in heralding the event, said that “the four nights in which the landmark Tower will remain ablaze in the colours of the Jamaican flag serve as a powerful symbol of the impactful presence of the Jamaican community, not only in Miami, but throughout South Florida.”

Almost 500,000 Jamaicans reside in Florida State with the largest concentration in the South Florida tri-county area – Dade, Broward and Palm Beach.

According to Marlon Hill, the Jamaican Diaspora Board Member for the Southern USA, the lighting of the landmark tower on Miami’s skyline reflected the significant contributions of Jamaicans to the social fabric of South Florida. This event, he continued, was a shining moment for the 45th anniversary of Independence of Jamaica and for Jamaicans in the Diaspora.
