The Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) continues it’s campaign to promote Jamaican foods by observing November 25, 2008 as ‘Eat Jamaica Day’. First observed in 2003, ‘Eat Jamaica Day’ was declared an official day following a proclamation issued by the Governor-General in 2006. This year’s expo will place emphasis on agricultural produce and processed foods.
Objectives of Eat Jamaica Day
The objectives of the campaign are many, some of which are: to sensitize Jamaicans about the diversity of the farming sector and its economic importance as it relates to job creation and income generation; facilitate and encourage farmers to produce more: celebrate the glory of the Jamaican cuisine; lift the morale of farmers and farming communities; attract new and young farmers to the sector and challenge Jamaicans to eat what we grow and grow what we eat.
The celebrations will include an agricultural exposition to be held at the Denbigh Showground in Clarendon, under the theme ‘Grow what we eat…eat what we grow’ where the Governor-General His Excellency the Most Honourable Professor Sir Kenneth Hall and his wife Her Excellency Lady Hall will be the guests of honour. The official ceremony will also include booth displays, food sampling, marching bands, information on agro-processing and other agricultural and farming technologies.
