As expected Jamaica continued their regional track and field dominance at the 38th Carifta Games held in Saint Lucia from April 10 – 13. Jamaica had to share the spotlight throughout the 3 day meet many times however with many spectacular record breaking performances all round which will mean good things to come from the regions athletes in the future.
Jamaica topped the medal table with 67 medals – 39 gold medals, 15 silver medals and 13 bronze medals followed by Trinidad and Tobago 29 medals and Barbados 21 medals. Hosts St Lucia lifted by an exuberant home crowd won 6 medals four of which were gold. Over 500 athletes from 26 territories participated at CARIFTA in 2009.
All eyes will now be on the IAAF World Youth Championships to be held in Italy from July 8-12 2009 to see how Jamaica and the wider Caribbean region’s juniour athletes perform.
