Bruce Golding Takes Office as Jamaica’s 8th Prime Minister

In a short, scripted and lavish ceremony today at Kings House, leader of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Bruce Golding took over the job as Prime Minister of Jamaica from the outgoing Portia Simpson-Miller.

Election Results

The JLP defeated the Peoples National Party (PNP) to win their first election since the mid 1980’s by acquiring 33 of the 60 seats available with the remaining 27 seats going to the PNP.

Special guests at the ceremony included Barbados’ Prime Minister Owen Arthur; vice-president of the Cuban Council of State, Britain’s Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Foreign and Commonwealth Office), Esteban Lazo Hernandez; Turks and Cacois Premier Michael Misick; Caricom Secretary-General Edwin Carrington; Trinidad and Tobago’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Arnold Piggott; Meg Munn; and three ministers of the Nation of Islam – Richard Muhammad, Carlos Muhammad and Hugh Muhammad.
