Caribbean people were in celebratory mood on July 5th 2006 when a sign for Bob Marley Boulevard was unveiled at the corner of Remsen and Church Avenues in the East Flatbush area of Brooklyn New York, right in the heart of a thriving caribbean community there.
The New York City Council, under the sponsorship of Charles Barron, Council member for the 42nd district, voted for the co-naming of Church Ave following a proposal from Community Board 17 earlier this year.
Local politicians, international guests, members of the Marley Family and over 1500 guests attending the unveiling ceremony.
The co-naming was initially met with opposition by some board members who thought that Marley’s open use of marijuana might send the wrong message but they were soon won over when encouraged to focus on the more positive aspects of the legends life and his impact on the world.
