Jamaicans Awarded Net Billing Licences – Can now sell power to JPS

A total of 11 individuals and companies have been approved by the Ministry of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining (STEM), to supply excess energy to the Jamaica Public Service Company Limited (JPS). The group, which include residential and commercial customers, were presented with net billing licences by Portfolio Minister, Hon. Phillip Paulwell, during a meeting of the Jamaica Energy Council at Jamaica House, in St. Andrew. The licence gives approval to individuals or companies that generate their own energy through the use of renewable sources, such as wind turbines or solar systems, to sell their excess electricity to the light and power company. Jamaica and other CARICOM countries to benefit from green energy projects

At least four Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries are to benefit from US$600 million in financing for renewable energy and energy efficiency projects in Central America and the Caribbean over the next five years. The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) says the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will also contribute funds towards the projects. The framework agreement was signed during the IDB’s annual meeting on Friday between IDB president Luis Albert Moreno and JICA senior special advisor Hiroto Arakawa. Jamaica Government Committed to LNG Project

Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining (STEM), Hon. Phillip Paulwell, has reiterated the Government’s intention to continue the LNG project started under the previous administration. Under the project, LNG will be supplied to the government and construction of an LNG Floating Storage and Re-gasification Terminal will be undertaken. Solamon Energy Corporation to build Large Solar Farm in Jamaica

The Toronto-based Solamon Energy Corporation says it plans to build the largest solar power plant in the Caribbean. The solar company said that the programme, to be built in Jamaica, will cost in the region of CAN$450 million or US$444.2 million. When completed, the farm will "enhance and improve the nation's energy infrastructure, as well as serve as a beacon to attract additional investment in the ICT (Information Communications Technology) and greentech sectors."
