Activities in the United Kingdom (UK) to celebrate Jamaica’s 50th anniversary of Independence are gathering momentum, with a flurry of events to take place from May 16 to October 16. The first of three ‘Jamaica 50’ Lectures will be held at the Jamaican High Commission in London on May 16, with Executive Chairman of GraceKennedy Limited, Douglas Orane, to speak on the topic: ‘Unleashing the Entrepreneurial Spirit: Jamaica at 50’. Distinguished Jamaican judge and President of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, Justice Patrick Robinson, will deliver the second lecture on:‘Human Rights: Jamaica to the World: Jamaica at 50’ on June 18 at Brunel University. Jamaica Celebrates 50 Years of Independence

Forty nine years ago, we respectfully lowered the Union Jack and proudly raised our own Black, Green and Gold flag as a representation of our first step into the world as a fledgling nation. With confidence and vigour we embraced Independence and embarked upon a journey that has taken us to where we are now – one year shy of our Golden Jubilee. Our sojourn has been a mixture of great achievements and disappointing setbacks; and while we recognise and celebrate the event of Independence as occurred on August 6, 1962, we acknowledge it in a real sense, as a process through which our country evolves towards the building of a nation.
