Chinese Scholarships for Jamaicans

The Government of the People’s Republic of China has presented six scholarships, for Jamaican students to pursue tertiary studies in that country over two to four years. The students will do courses in broadcasting, architecture, public administration, international relations, international trade and land resource management, in several cities including Beijing, Chongquing, Jinan and Wuhan.

Speaking at the presentation at the Chinese Embassy, Kingston on Wednesday August 17, the Ambassador, His Excellency Zheng Qingdian, noted that the Chinese Government Scholarship Programme, funded by its Ministry of Education, is to strengthen mutual understanding and friendship between the Chinese people and the rest of the world.

“In the past years, with full support of the Jamaican Government, the Chinese Government Scholarship Programme has sponsored scores of Jamaican students to undertake studies at Chinese universities,” he said, noting that the six winners this year were selected on the basis of their outstanding performances and huge potential.

Ambassador Zheng congratulated the winners, and thanked the Scholarship Assistance Unit in the Office of the Cabinet and the Bilateral Relations Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade for supporting bilateral relations.

The recipients and the degrees they will pursue are: Earl Bailey, University of Technology (UTech), Ph. D., Land Resource Management; Shelly Ann Murphy, UTech, Masters, International Trade; Raphael Shirley, Excelsior Community College, Bachelor of Arts, Architecture; Danielle Russell, University of the West Indies (UWI), Masters, Broadcasting Art; Rohan Wright, UWI, Masters, Public Administration; and Dahlia Sterling, Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Masters, International Relations. Twenty one Jamaican students are currently studying in China under the programme.
