2500 Metres of Negril Shoreline to be Protected

The Government of Jamaica has responded to the call of residents and tourism stakeholders in Negril for increased measures to protect the area’s world famous beaches. Approximately 2,500 metres of the Negril shoreline is to be rehabilitated under Jamaica’s Adaptation Fund Programme launched last week in Kingston. The initiative, which is being implemented through approximately $902 million (US$9.965 million) in grants from the Adaption Fund, will focus on protecting coastal areas and agriculture. Jamaica was been named the 'Favourite Worldwide Destination' by the readers of British Travel Awards' ‘Check In' magazine. The island took the top spot from more than 70 other destinations in the magazine's new Readers' Choice Awards, announced at the weekend. Chairperson of the Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo), Maxine Henry-Wilson, has emphasised that the Falmouth Port, in Trelawny is a natural economic asset, attracting thousands of overseas visitors, and members of the community must protect the facility. "The port won several awards recently, and last year about 500,000 persons came to that port.
