Jamaica Jamaica! Exhibition about Jamaican music opens at the National Gallery

Jamaica, Jamaica! brings together rare memorabilia, photographs, visual art, audio recordings and footage unearthed from Jamaica's best museums and most elusive collectors and studios, while collaborating with legendary local visual artists to convey the essence of a true Jamaican music experience. Teeming with creativity and innovation, Jamaica has produced some of the major musical currents in today's popular music landscape; yet, its rich history and diversity are often overshadowed by its most famous icon, reggae superstar Bob Marley. This exhibition aims at showcasing a broader vision that has allowed the world to know the island's music, by digging deep into its past and present in search for the roots of "rebel music", beyond the cliché and the postcard. The most ambitious...

Jamaican Women continue success at 2019 World Athletic Championships

The prevailing word on the street, on social media and from pundits was that Jamaica was expected to struggle at the 2019 IAAF World Championships in Doha. Afterall Jamaica was "in transition" and "lacked strength". All of that turned out to be rubbish as the Jamaica team once shone brightly on the world stage. Sadly, athletics is still a male-focused sport and it was good to once again see Jamaica's women continue to carry the Jamaica flag high at the World Champs as they have had constantly done. Gone are the Bolts, the Powells and the Blakes but still the Jamaican women carry the torch lead by the indomitable Shelly-Ann Frazer-Pryce. If we tally Jamaica's medal haul at all the World Champs, the women, by far outshine the men in quantity and quality. If we go father and look at...

Jamaica joins Coalition of Finance Ministers for Climate Action

Finance Ministers know most clearly the economic consequences of climate change: both the risks posed by its mounting impacts to their economies, as well as, increasingly, the opportunities of climate action which could unlock $26 trillion globally in investments and create 65 million more jobs through 2030. They can also play a leading role in tackling climate change, incentivizing climate-informed public expenditure, and utilizing climate fiscal tools such as carbon taxes and emissions trading systems to cut emissions and prioritize low-carbon growth. Some businesses do have the choice of applying for carbon credits, which Cool Effect delves more into, so they can function to a capacity that they need, but the end result is always to reduce these emissions in as many ways as possible. ...

Jamaicans Urged to Educate Themselves on Reparation

Chairperson of the National Commission on Reparations (NCR), Professor Verene Shepherd, is urging Jamaicans to educate themselves about reparation, as the country continues to suffer from the legacies of slavery. “Slavery is not too remote in the past for it to have contemporary relevance. The relationship between historical injustices, persistent poverty, and diminishing opportunities and development are poorly understood by too many Jamaicans. Yet such relationship looms larger than ever before as a primary obstacle to development,” she stated. Professor Shepherd, who was speaking at a Jamaica Information Service (JIS) Think Tank at the agency’s head office in Kingston on July 31, stated that enslaved people have been misrepresented and that past injustices continue to blight the deve...

Boys’ and Girls’ Champs 2013 Best Ever – 30 record fall as Calabar and Holmwood Triumph

Calabar High School roared loudly on the final day to successfully defend the Mortimor Geddes trophy — symbol of schoolboys' track and field supremacy — when they strolled to an easy victory on yesterday's final day of the 103rd ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys' and Girls' Athletics Championships at the National Stadium. After entering the day in third place, on 110 points, behind Jamaica College (JC) on 115 and Kingston College (KC) on 113, Calabar wasted no time in asserting their dominance on the track, as they gradually pulled away from the pack, piling up points in almost every event on the final day of the five-day championships.Calabar made a mockery of predictions that Champs would be a close affair with less than 10 points separating the top two schools. Coming into yesterday's 24 finals ...

Historic point for Jamaica in Mexico

Jamaica achieved one of the most impressive results in its footballing history on Wednesday, drawing 0-0 with Mexico in the opening match for each in the final round of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying for Brazil 2014. After seven straight losses to the CONCACAF powerhouse in Mexico City, the Reggae Boyz captured its first-ever point at the renowned Estadio Azteca on the strength of outstanding play from goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts and a well-implemented game plan that kept Mexico largely at bay. The result should not come as a complete surprise. In their last World Cup Qualifying encounter on October 11, 2008, the Jamaicans defeated visiting Mexico 1-0 in Kingston thanks to a first-half goal by Ricardo Fuller. Arguably, the best chance of the game fell to Jamaica in only the 8th minute. Gar...

New Year’s Message from the Governor-General Sir Patrick Allen

My fellow Jamaicans and Friends of Jamaica, We begin each year with the joys, burden, sorrow, or triumph of the past year still etched in our minds. That past and the way it influences us will determine how we live in the ensuing year. The questions before each of us are, how well have we learned the lessons of the past and how shall we use our failures and mistakes as stepping stones to progress in this New Year! Today we come to this new page of our history, as individuals and as a people, having passed through a year fraught with many challenges. Yet 2012 was also a year of unforgettable achievements by fellow Jamaicans. It marked the celebration of our nation’s Golden Jubilee, as well as our exploits at the memorable London Olymipics. Last year we recognized once again how blesse...

New Year’s Message from Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller

Jamaicans All: Celebrating the advent of a New Year always reminds me of the wonder of a glorious Jamaican sunrise. As the golden sun peeks over the majestic Blue Mountains, it seems to gently push away the night-sky. Rays of hope and promise nudge through a soft and reflective crimson sky. The dazzling light and vibrant energy of that sunshine fuel the activities of a brand new day…a brand new year. On this the first day of the year 2013, I greet you with the love, light, warmth and energy of this new dawn. Our ancestors from Africa, Asia and Europe call upon us to gaze into our past to seek out the lessons that help us to chart the path for our future. Today, I call on each of us to look to both recent and more distant histories to prepare us for every new day; every new year. That ...
