Jamaica Jamaica! Exhibition about Jamaican music opens at the National Gallery

Jamaica, Jamaica! brings together rare memorabilia, photographs, visual art, audio recordings and footage unearthed from Jamaica's best museums and most elusive collectors and studios, while collaborating with legendary local visual artists to convey the essence of a true Jamaican music experience. Teeming with creativity and innovation, Jamaica has produced some of the major musical currents in today's popular music landscape; yet, its rich history and diversity are often overshadowed by its most famous icon, reggae superstar Bob Marley. This exhibition aims at showcasing a broader vision that has allowed the world to know the island's music, by digging deep into its past and present in search for the roots of "rebel music", beyond the cliché and the postcard. The most ambitious...

10 Interesting Facts about Kingston

We are celebrating the 145th Anniversary since Kingston became the Capital on Jamaica. Kingston was founded on July 22, 1692, as a refuge for survivors of the June 7th earthquake which destroyed two-thirds of Port Royal. Prior to the earthquake, Port Royal was the headquarters of the English buccaneers and was known as the “wickedest” city in the world because of the riotous life of the town’s inhabitants including the likes of privateer, Sir Henry Morgan. Kingston is the smallest parish yet the most populated city on the island. The geographical border for the parish of Kingston encompasses the following communities, Tivoli Gardens, Denham Town, downtown Kingston, National Heroes Park, Kingston Gardens, Rae Town, Bournemouth Gardens, Norman Gardens, Springfield, Rennock Lodge,...

Jamaicans Urged to Educate Themselves on Reparation

Chairperson of the National Commission on Reparations (NCR), Professor Verene Shepherd, is urging Jamaicans to educate themselves about reparation, as the country continues to suffer from the legacies of slavery. “Slavery is not too remote in the past for it to have contemporary relevance. The relationship between historical injustices, persistent poverty, and diminishing opportunities and development are poorly understood by too many Jamaicans. Yet such relationship looms larger than ever before as a primary obstacle to development,” she stated. Professor Shepherd, who was speaking at a Jamaica Information Service (JIS) Think Tank at the agency’s head office in Kingston on July 31, stated that enslaved people have been misrepresented and that past injustices continue to blight the deve...

Boys’ and Girls’ Champs 2013 Best Ever – 30 record fall as Calabar and Holmwood Triumph

Calabar High School roared loudly on the final day to successfully defend the Mortimor Geddes trophy — symbol of schoolboys' track and field supremacy — when they strolled to an easy victory on yesterday's final day of the 103rd ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys' and Girls' Athletics Championships at the National Stadium. After entering the day in third place, on 110 points, behind Jamaica College (JC) on 115 and Kingston College (KC) on 113, Calabar wasted no time in asserting their dominance on the track, as they gradually pulled away from the pack, piling up points in almost every event on the final day of the five-day championships.Calabar made a mockery of predictions that Champs would be a close affair with less than 10 points separating the top two schools. Coming into yesterday's 24 finals ...

Historic point for Jamaica in Mexico

Jamaica achieved one of the most impressive results in its footballing history on Wednesday, drawing 0-0 with Mexico in the opening match for each in the final round of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying for Brazil 2014. After seven straight losses to the CONCACAF powerhouse in Mexico City, the Reggae Boyz captured its first-ever point at the renowned Estadio Azteca on the strength of outstanding play from goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts and a well-implemented game plan that kept Mexico largely at bay. The result should not come as a complete surprise. In their last World Cup Qualifying encounter on October 11, 2008, the Jamaicans defeated visiting Mexico 1-0 in Kingston thanks to a first-half goal by Ricardo Fuller. Arguably, the best chance of the game fell to Jamaica in only the 8th minute. Gar...
